Session 1: Options to Assign Carbon Intensity to Biomass from
Farm Gate to Consumer Product

Moderator: Paul Zorner, Chairman, AFCC (confirmed)
Panelists:

  • Jeffrey O’Hara, Deputy Director, Office of Energy Policy and New Uses, USDA

  • Professor Narayan, Michigan State University

  • Professor Zondlo, Princeton University

  • Jesse Daystar, Chief Sustainable Officer, Cotton Incorporated

  • Travis Kraft, VP Sales, BioDel AG

The expert panelists will discuss options for, and challenges to assigning a carbon intensity value at the beginning of life for biomaterials sitting at the farm gate, and their progression to biobased climate smart products sitting on the consumer shelf.  What technologies are available for measuring both GHG emissions throughout the production cycle, and atmospheric carbon sequestration in both soil and biomass will be discussed. Also discussed will be the impact and value of this life cycle analysis, and potentially capturing it as an additional certification in the USDA Rural Development BioPreferred Program to establish a standardized net result for manufacturing organizations to use in purchasing raw goods for processing and for consumers to use in guiding their purchasing decisions.

Session 2: End of Life Managed

Moderator: Alexander Truelove, Legacy & Advocacy, BPI

Panelists:

  • TBD

    • Managed Waste

      • Composting, Home Composting, Anerobic Digestion

  • Professor Jason Locklin, University of Georgia

    • Use in the Environment

  • Marcus Eriksen, Co-founder and Scientist, 5 Gyres Institute

Lunch & Session 3: Material Use and Flows
Moderator: Jay Fitzgerald, Chief Scientist, Bioenergy Technologies Office at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

Panelists:

  • Jay Fitzgerald, Chief Scientist, Bioenergy Technologies Office at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

  • Tori Gonzalez, Management and Program Analyst, Staff Lead, National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution, EPA

  • Jonn Foulk, ARS National Program Leader for Product Quality and New Uses, USDA

  • Susan Thoman, Prinicipal and Managing Director, Compost Manufacturing Alliance, LLC

  • Jennifer Larkin Lukawski, Principle, BGR Group - Status for EPR

The expert panelists will present their views and current work on food waste -using packaging to divert organic waste and the use of compostable materials to enhance food scrap diversion. Focus on volume of plastics used, and just how much is recycled. The status of EPR. Costs of utilizing materials.

Session 4: Biopolymer Production and Uses

Moderator: Vijay Srinivasan, Senior Advisor, Systems Integration Division (NIST)
Panelists:
